Dos and Don'ts for ePortfolios

Don't

  • use your electronic portfolio as a personal Web page that includes information other than professional and academic material.
  • use your electronic portfolio as an official record of your academic record, which is only available through means designated by the Office of the Registrar.
  • use your electronic portfolio as a place to store all your academic work in an electronic format.
  • place your home address, phone number or non-college email address (unless you wish to be contacted in those venues).
  • use other students' and professors' contact information (address, phone, email) unless permission is given.
  • use other students' and professors' work unless permission is given.
  • use images, animated flash, sound files or the likes of any sort from other sources without checking the conditions of usage or license agreements.

Do:

  • put your email or a link to contact you on every page.
  • review whether your text, background and images make the page hard to read.
  • put your last date of revision so viewers can ascertain current status.
  • test your links before you post them.
  • edit everything with a critical eye; do not just rely on spelling and grammar checks via the computer.
  • view your portfolio using more than one browser to ensure it is readable in both Explorer and FireFox.
  • have a peer review your portfolio.
