Step 2 - Planning

This step involves two parts. Part one is looking at what you have available to work with when creating your portfolio, and part two is thinking about what you want your ePortfolio to look like.

Part I.

There are many things that can be used when creating and working with artifacts that will be placed in a portfolio. Some things that are helpful when creating electronic portfolios include:

Hardware:

  • Computer
  • Scanner
  • Digital Camera, memory stick
  • Digital Video Camera, tripod, & DV tape
  • CD burner
  • CDs, disks

Software:

  • Word processing (Microsoft Word, Word Perfect, Apple Works)
  • Presentation software (PowerPoint)
  • Image editor (Paint Shop Pro, Print Shop Pro)
  • Web page authoring (Dreamweaver, GoLive)
  • Video editing (Pinnacle, Dazzle, iMovie)

Part II.

Next, you need to think about where and how you want to store your ePortfolio.

You have three choices,

  1. store your ePortfolio with a hosting provider that enables a wizard to build your portfolio for you,
  2. build it yourself using an HTML editor such as Dreamweaver, or
  3. hire a web designer to create exactly what you want.

If you are storing your portfolio with a provider that has a wizard, you simply need to follow the steps of the wizard to create your portfolio. Regent's Blackboard Portfolio creator has a wizard you can use to build your portfolio or you can use one of the external website hosting companies.

If you are building your portfolio yourself, you will need an HTML editor and you may need access to an FTP application. Some website authoring software (HTML editors with all the bells and whisles) have built in FTP applications. You will find more information and free downloads for some of these programs on the SPC Portfolio Resources page.

If you are considering a web designer, you may want to find one that will offer you the look and feel you are desiring as well as other services such as assistance with hosting your portfolio.
