Career Switcher Program

The Career Switcher Alternative Route to Licensure Program is designed to enable individuals from various occupational and life experiences to become middle school and high school classroom teachers. Regent University's Career Switcher Program provides initial licensure in the Commonwealth of Virginia in addition to 18 graduate level credits that can be counted toward the completion of a Master's Degree in Education.

  • Length: 18 graduate-level credits. Complete coursework (Level I) and first year of teaching (Level II) in as little as 20 months. Additionally, on-campus students have the option of enrolling in an accelerated summer semester which can be completed in only 16 months.
  • Format:
    • On-Campus Level I Format: Level I Classes held bi-weekly on Thursday and Friday evenings, and all day Saturday with the exception of the summer session. Students will also participate in 25 hours of practicum experience observing a Virginia classroom.
    • Online Level I Format: Courses offered online supported by face-to-face meetings—typically held on weekday evenings at locations around Virginia. Students will also participate in 25 hours of practicum experience observing a Virginia classroom.
    • Level II Format: Level II is one year in a full-time, paid teaching position at a public or accredited non-public school. Seminars and mentorship take place during this time.
  • Results: Highly Qualified - Recommended to the Virginia Department of Education for the Career Switcher Provisional License & 5-year renewable Virginia License.

  • Features: A one-year, full-time, paid teaching position to be obtained by the student once they have received their Career Switcher Provisional License and mentor support for students in their first year of teaching.
  • Master's Option: Regent's Career Switcher Program provides over half of the credits needed to obtain a M.Ed. - allowing students to earn a M.Ed. by pursuing 14 additional credits. Students may pursue the M.Ed. TESOL (with PreK-12 ESL add-on endorsement), M.Ed. Individualized or M.Ed. Curriculum & Instruction. Note: Individuals seeking the M.Ed. TESOL/ESL and M.Ed. Curriculum and Instruction degrees will be required to complete additional credits.
  • Tuition: A discounted tuition rate of $4,050 plus additional fees (subject to change without notice) for Level I of the program, and a discounted tuition rate of $2,350 plus additional fees (subject to change without notice) for Level II of the program. (Tuition rate listed is valid through Summer 2012 semester.) Note: Students are billed separately for Levels I and II.

Regent Alumni Named Rookie of the Year

Career Switcher Program completer, Mark Howerin, was recently selected as Rookie Teacher of the Year by Suffolk Public Schools. Mark is currently teaching math at Turlington Woods School.

Norfolk/Regent Partnership Continues

For the fifth successive year the partnership between the School of Education's Career Switcher / Teach Now program and Norfolk Public Schools has been awarded a federal grant. $255,000 has been made available for academic year 2011/12 to help recruit, prepare and retain teachers of high-need subjects who may teach in Norfolk's middle and high schools. Program Chair, Dr. Mervyn Wighting, said he was delighted to receive the award again this year and noted that it was a glowing testimonial to all the hard work that staff and faculty have put into the program. Career Switcher Alumnus Honored by School Division

Sam Richards, currently completing his third year of teaching Technology in Norfolk Public Schools, was awarded the School Division’s Inspirational Award for outstanding service to the local community. Prior to joining Regent’s Career Switcher program, Sam was an electronics engineer.

Level II Career Switcher Honored by School Division

Beth Lambert, completing her first year of teaching Earth Science at Granby HS in Norfolk Public Schools, was presented with the School Division’s Most Inspirational First Year Teacher award. Ms. Lambert joined the Career Switcher program following distinguished service in the US Navy as a Command Master Chief.

Career Switcher Named Rookie of the Year
Level II Career Switcher, Alfred Speller, was recently named Kings Fork Middle School’s Rookie of the Year (2008-2009). As a result of this recognition, he is now being considered for the Rookie of the Year award for the entire Suffolk County Public Schools System.

Career Switcher program completers will be able to: 

  • Achieve and demonstrate competence in the academic content areas that they plan to teach.
  • Demonstrate the pedagogical knowledge and skills to become competent to work with a variety of students in accordance with professional standards.
  • Demonstrate responsive, caring, and reflective teaching skills informed by the School of Education’s conceptual framework and the program completer’s personal faith.
  • Transition successfully from a former career to a career in teaching.

Note: The Career Switcher program is not a degree-seeking program. The program alone will lead to licensure.

Median loan debt of completers by type of loan:  According to the U.S. Department of Education Disclosure Requirements found online at http://www.ifap.ed.gov/GainfulEmploymentInfo/2011GEFAQ.html#g-q7 for programs with less than 10 completers per year, the school should not disclose the median debt amounts (Title IV, private educational loan, and debt from institutional financing).  For this reason, Regent University will not disclose the median loan debt of completers by type of loan online.
