The Masters of Education in Elementary Education leads to PreK-6 teacher certification in the Commonwealth of Virginia upon successful completion of all program requirements. Courses emphasize best practices for instruction and assessment as well as the preparation needed for PreK-6 students to master the Standards of Learning (SOL). Graduates of the M.Ed. in Elementary Education will be highly qualified to demonstrate an understanding of the unique learning characteristics, needs, and capabilities of PreK-6 students. Knowledge of the dimensions of learning and employment of appropriate teaching strategies are key foci of the program.

- Length: 39 credit hours. Complete coursework and student teaching in as little as 18 months.
- Format: Offered on Tuesday and Thursday evenings on the Virginia Beach Campus, supplemented by online coursework. Students may begin the program in the fall, spring or summer semesters.
- Results: Master of Education degree & Highly Qualified - Recommended to the Virginia Department of Education for 5-year renewable PreK-6 Virginia License.

Elementary Education graduates will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of content knowledge and pedagogy of the elementary curriculum (VA SOL content).
- Demonstrate skill in the implementation of basic principles of teaching and learning and the integration of theory with practice. Specifically he/she will demonstrate knowledge of the dimensions of learning and will employ appropriate teaching strategies for ensuring their acquisition by the learner.
- Demonstrate a commitment to continuous professional growth by regularly examining his/her own academic knowledge and competence, assuming responsibility for his/her own learning and development through engaging in the study of current research, participating in the activities of professional organizations, and manifesting an attitude of acceptance of change and a willingness to experiment with new alternatives in teaching and learning.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the unique learning characteristics, needs, and capacities of children on different ages and developmental levels, of different cultural and language backgrounds, and of varying exceptionalities.
- Demonstrate a functional knowledge of the changing roles of education in our society, the goals of public and private education, and the organization of the school curricula as reflected in these goals.
- Develop self-awareness and an understanding of their own worldview and how that perspective influences their own learning and teaching.
- Use educational technology in innovative ways to enhance classroom learning.
- Demonstrate intellectual, spiritual, social, and emotional maturity and a professional attitude in relating to and communicating with learners, fellow teachers, school administrators, parents, and members of the community at large.
