Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) - Stress Management for the Trauma Service Provider (Trauma)

This valuable CISM course is for anyone working in people-helping fields, or with those in crisis. In this course, partcipants will explore the “Stress Continuum,” the levels of stress including eustress, traumatic stress, burnout, countertransference, compassion fatigue, and vicarious traumatization which may occur as a result of helping others. This is an exceptionally important course for anyone working in roles where they counsel or assist others who have experienced traumatic events.

A discussion of coping strategies, individual self-report exercises, and an experiential group support session will assist the participating trauma provider in assessing his or her own level of stress. Stress management self care techniques will be presented, experienced, and discussed. Participants will receive the ICISF workbook and ICISF certificate.

A Survival Guide for English Speakers, Teaching English in a Mission Environment - Level 1

Teaching English is a great way to forge relationships with internationals abroad who desire to learn the language. Endless opportunities abound for this type of outreach. Have you considered a short-term mission trip abroad, but had reservations because you thought you weren’t adequately equipped? Have you been a part of a teaching team overseas but would like some fresh ideas to boost your effectiveness?  Have you desired to connect with those of other cultures, but don’t know how? Join us for an introduction to teaching English overseas on short term mission trips. You will learn tried and true methods of planning, teaching, and evaluating lessons. In addition you will learn ways to build relationships and share Christ with those of other cultures in a non-threatening manner. This class will also help build your confidence in sharing Christ with others while teaching English

BRILLIANCE @ WORK: Smarter Communication, Coaching, & Culture Shaping Skills - Part 1 - June 13, 2012, Part 2 - July 11, 2012

June 13, 2012 - Part #1 - This seminar is one of two seminars (each can be taken as stand alone) that are designed to meet the needs of leaders who face the changing work environments in today's economic uncertainty. Working examples and models of successful leaders, consultants, and coaches are presented and demonstrated to enable participants to engage challenging interpersonal and organizational opportunities with new perspectives and resources. Participants will experience breakthrough communication insights, develop interpersonal competencies for conflict solving and team building, and acquire innovative coaching methods for themselves and the people they lead and manage. The results from this interactive and informative day will be highly transferrable to the workplace environment for increased morale, motivational buy-in, and personal and departmental performance.

Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) - Individual Crisis Intervention & Peer Support and Group Crisis Intervention – Combo Course

July 13, 14 & 15, 2012

This 3-day course combines all of the content of the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation's Individual Crisis Intervention & Peer Support and Group Crisis Intervention courses.

Crisis Intervention and Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) are NOT intended to be psychotherapy. Crisis intervention is sometimes referred to as 'emotional first aid' and is a specialized acute emergency mental health intervention which requires specialized training. The core elements of this comprehensive, systematic and multi-component crisis intervention curriculum teach participants the fundamentals of, and a specific protocol for, individual and group crisis intervention. Participants will be prepared with the knowledge and tools to provide several group crisis intervention techniques and a wide range of crisis intervention services. Group techniques include demobilizations, defusing, and the Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD).

This advanced course in teaching English in a mission environment will provide students with a variety of instructional strategies and techniques including, ice breakers, lesson plans, games, cultural activities, and a plethora of hands on activities and resources designed to help teach English to non-native speakers. Participants will be able to use these resources stateside and abroad.  In addition, students will learn ways to share the love of Christ. If you are looking for ways to enhance your effectiveness in presenting English, this class is for you!

Center for Trauma Studies Workshop
Series

The Center for Trauma Studies provides opportunities to be trained according to Green Cross, Red Cross, FEMA, Global Aid Network (GAIN), and Operation Blessing standards. Additional workshops or training in critical incident stress management (CISM), thought-field/emotion field therapy, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), and trauma incident reduction will be offered as the program continues to develop. Continuing education hours are available.


Eldred Psychology Colloquium Series

The Eldred Psychology Colloquium Series brings outstanding professionals and scientists in psychology and related fields to the campus. Past speakers have addressed a wide range of topics, from marital work with difficult couples to evolving roles for psychology in health care. The colloquium series has featured leading psychological researchers, anthropologists, military psychologists, presidents of APA and its divisions, and philosophers to give our academic community cutting edge access to the world of psychological science. Continuing education hours are available.


Cultural Diversity Series

The Cultural Diversity Series is an initiative that's designed to promote cultural awareness, student professional development, and spiritual integration. School of Psychology and Counseling students enrolled in the Psychology doctoral program (Psy.D.) and school faculty present topics that address the various dimensions of diversity (e.g., race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, physical ability, marital status, sexual orientation, and spiritual/religious orientation). Continuing eduction hours are available.
